Apparently we are a filthy people.

Audrey caught her first bug at Christmas. Its a virus of some sort that has been brutal on her poor little stomach, and torture for her brand new parents.

There was a point in time we vowed we would not be those "neurotic" parents that required everyone to purrell their hands when coming within 5 feet of our baby. Apparently the joke is on us. If you plan on visiting anytime soon be warned you'll need to medically scrub in before you even breathe near her.

Mr. Anderson - Thanksgiving Master

Given that I'm carrying around a big old butterball belly, the hubby took the lead in cooking much of our Thanksgiving meal. Everything he made was absolutely wonderful, and I'm sad to admit I actually dropped the pecan yams on the floor, which means I'm never going to hear the end of his gloating.

Amazing multi-tasking skills:

He reads recipes on line, cooks, and watches football at the same time. (Why can't he multi-task like this all the time?)

Fresh cranberries and clementines:

LaPlante Family Secret Meat Stuffing. Yum!

Ah, the magic of Halloween

My friend Deborah does a statistic evaluation of her Halloween every year that always makes me smile. Her girls look adorable which is fun to see, but honestly the count of candy dispensed always shocks me, and I love the inevitable stories of looney parents.

This year I was in Denver for Halloween and the man was hiding from children with the lights out in the house on his own in Chicago so we didn't get to enjoy handing out candy. We did go to some costume parties though. Real adult costume parties. Which made me realize Deborah's stats are always missing something. She's never mentioned the rather uncomfortable trend of increasingly inappropriate costumes for adults! So here's my contribution to her stats, based on what I witnessed both at parties in Chicago over the weekend and in the bars here in LODO this year...

3: men with "Dick in a Box" costumes. (Yes, the boxes had something inside)

1: Michael Vick, complete with his petite wife in a dog costume and a noose.

1: Full scale Marie Atoinette. Which was cool except, ehem, "the mademoiselles" kept popping out.

1: Guy in an video arcade outfit, with the joystick right there.

4: Britney Spears (all versions, including one with a K-Fed)

1: Paris Hilton

1: Nicole Ritchie (pregnant version)

1: Lindsay Lohan (super orange tan)

(BTW - the last three were out together, which was hilarious.)

Too many to count: "naughty".... cops, nurses, devil girls, angel girls, Dorthys. It seemed to me they were at the bars mingling with young guys that all seemed to be dressed as "jeans and t-shirt" guys. Not sure what that's about.

Sigh.

Next year I look forward to being back in OP for Halloween, where all I have to do is worry about the suspiciously-older city kids who apparently dress as thugs and try to grab at the candy by the fistful.

Christmas 2006

Good tidings to all of you out there in the blogosphere. Sorry for the lack of posts lately but I've been busy eating Christmas cookies and thinking very hard about how (really truly) I will (absolutely without doubt) start working out more in 2007.

While I'm in such a reflective mood, I thought I'd take some time to share a little list of things that have brought me great joy and comfort during this holiday season:

  1. All members of my family are safe and (relatively) healthy.

  2. My little brother and his lovely girlfriend got engaged.

  3. They also announced that in 7 months or so they will be supplying my parents with their first grandchild. (Wooo! Way to take the pressure off. Thanks R and H!)

  4. My dear friend Amy got engaged to a really fantastic guy that makes her smile like no other.

  5. The TEN PAIRS OF SHOES that I got at the Last Chance Nordstrom store in Phoenix. Every one of them a smokin' deal. (Hmmm, seriously considering moving that up to #1, but that's wrong, right?)

  6. The three warm desert sunsets that I have enjoyed here in Scottsdale with my gorgeous husband.

  7. The very special gift of a family heirloom that was given to me by my MIL while we were here with her for Christmas.

  8. Finally got some time to catch up with some of my favorite girlfriends for shopping/dinner.

  9. Got to meet little baby Andrews.

  10. The Bears vs. Packers Game at home at Soldier Field was moved to Sunday Night.

  11. I also received not one, but TWO, beautiful cashmere sweaters for Christmas. (Clearly I was good this year.)

  12. Even while a work-in-progress, my new house looks really cute at Christmas

  13. Did I mention Christmas cookies? Especially little almond tea cookies covered with sugar crystals. Mmmmm.

I hope your Christmas brought equal joy to you and yours.

Halloween Stats

At Work:

22 Pairs of Halloween earrings
5 Halloween Sweaters
2 Pairs of Halloween socks
2 Lara Crofts (Seriously. Is that office appropriate?)
1 Mrs. Robinson (From "The Graduate". Hmmmm....)
1 Guy in a Gorilla suit

At Home:

150 Pieces of candy distributed in 1 hour.
1 Emergency candy run.

My friend Deborah keeps much better stats on her blog. She got one mom looking for candy on behalf of her toddler. I must say, there's something not right about moms with candy bags. We got a few of those at our door as well. And some didn't even bother with half-baked excuses like, "it's for my sick child... (yadda yadda)" One set in particular came back to our door *twice* with no costumes, no excuses -- just grocery bags outstretched. I'm soooo on to those two. I'm saving special treats for them next year.

It's Halloween morning.

Our annual traditions have begun...

1) Shut down the house, turn off the lights, lower the shades, and pull in all decorations -- just in case we're not home from work in time for the trick or treaters.

2) Drive to work wondering just how many holiday sweaters, earrings, socks and scrunchies you'll be seeing at the office today.

Yeeee!

I love this city

The fireworks on the 4th were MUCH bigger than the 5th. Our neighborhood went crazy. This morning the cats were out from under the bed, however when Mr. Anderson ran the coffee bean grinder they both freaked and ran back under again. I think they have post traumatic stress disorder.

Take a look at the debris on our deck the morning after. Keep in mind...

1) our roof deck is higher than most around
2) we didn't have a party
3) there wasn't an official sanctioned city show anywhere near us

Happy 4th!

It's absolutely beautiful out, and everywhere you look Chicagoans are out enjoying all the city has to offer.

Yesterday afternoon we went to Arlington to bet on the ponies. I came thisclose to winning on two boxed trifectas. I can't tell you how frustrating that was. I am entirely convinced that with more practice I will completely master the skill of forecasting horse races and become instantly rich. My husband is behind this plan (naturally). His capacity for love and faith in me, of course, is why I married him.

When we got home from the track we went out on the roof deck to watch fireworks. I suppose if you'd asked me I would have guessed it would be a pretty good show, but holy crap I had no idea it would be that crazy! It was shock and awe out there. 360 degrees of bright, crackling, lights. (All of it, I'm sure, was high grade, semi-legal, and recently imported from the great state of Indiana.) I kept swiveling around oohing and aahing. (Actually, as I type this, I'm realizing that I probably looked like a developmentally challenged 3 year-old. LOL.) About 11 pm or so our next door neighbors started to set off a few fireworks on their roof -- fun and first, then a few got a bit close for comfort and we opted to head in. Good thing because Ringo and Jethro were freaking out at the noise. We tried to comfort them a bit, but they ended up spending much of the night under our bed.

This morning we slept in and then went for bike ride along the lake and checked out Soul Coughing playing at Taste of Chicago. They sounded great. Much better than I remembered them being. Its amazing what playing outside in a fantastic festival atmosphere does for a band's sound.

We're back at home now, relaxing after watching the end of the World Cup game. The cats are back under the bed though. The crazy Italians across the street are setting off victory fireworks in the street in broad daylight. Between that and the fireworks tonight, I'm thinking we won't see the kitties out from under the bed again until August.

Some pics of our day yesterday...

My notes before race #9... when I was absolutely sure I was going to be rich...

I won't show you what I looked like after the race was over. Needless to say it wasn't pretty.

I tried to capture the fireworks over the city. Didn't really get a good shot, but here's a glimpse of the ones our neighbors set off that put the cats over the edge:

Holiday Greetings from Bear Country

When we moved from Los Angeles to Chicago a year ago, priority one for Mr. Anderson was getting a whole season's worth of Bears tickets. Sounded like a blast to me. Then winter came. Let me just say this -- never did I imagine a day where I would be standing in a frigid stadium, wind whipping at my face, wearing two pairs of long johns, two sets of socks, jeans, boots, three layered sweaters, a giant down coat, a hat, scarf, and two pairs of gloves screaming, "Cheeseheads suck!" at the top of my lungs.

I guess that officially makes me a Chicagoan now.
