Henry Harlan Anderson
Born 5/22/10
5:23 am
10 lbs, 10 oz
23 inches
Yes, you read that right. 10 lbs, 10 oz. And yes, I delivered him the old fashioned way.
Yes, I'm OK.
His size is the fault of my lovely in-laws, the Anderson family. They're cursed blessed with giant, healthy babies.
He's named after his daddy's great grandfather, Henry, and his maternal family line, Harlan.
Those circles under my eyes are all thanks to bad genes on my side of the family. And an eleven hour labor that started at 4 pm the night before. If you think they're impressive in this pic, you should see them now.

Sisters are Special. Aunts are Scary.
My sister is on day 4 with us and Aud is still screaming every time she picks her up. Not a little whimpery cry either. She does a full blown OH GOD NO! HOW COULD YOU?! howl when Cheryl tries to hold her.
I don't get it. Apparently Aud has stranger danger for all men, plus her aunt. So odd.
Anyway, this minor hiccup hasn't stopped me from taking advantage of C being here. If she just sits on the floor with her and doesn't touch her while she plays, Audball can deal with her for a little while, which is all this momma needs to get a nice shower in without stress. I even shaved my legs people! My child's psychological health be damned.
Apart from the baby's misery, we've managed to have a nice visit. There have been some good laughs and smiles and also some moments where we both miss my mom. Yesterday actually, my sister mentioned how seeing the baby and playing with her makes her wish my mom was with us. It occurred to me I used to think that way a lot too. Your heart and your logical mind go powerfully out of synch when you experience loss. You ache for fantasies of what could have been. But they were never going to be. After all, if she were still alive, mom would be 2000 miles away and wouldn't see the baby regularly. And I wouldn't think twice about it. But instead I miss her every day as if she lived next door and we were best friends.
Deep breath. Change of topic...
In other more classic "sister-moment" news, C also announced that now that mom's gone it's my job to arrange her wedding. At that point I did my best to channel mom when I said, "Yea, really? Get busy trying to land a man, would ya?"

Grandpa Visit
My father came out to see Audball this weekend. It wasn't a great start -- as soon as he walked in she presented her patented "men are scary" quivering pout followed by loud sad sobs -- but she managed to warm up to him when he made funny faces during dinner.
We visited the aquarium downtown and took dad on a walking tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright homes nearby. Audrey was oblivious to the fish and the gorgeous architecture but it didn't matter of course. It was just nice to help my dad get out and see the smile on his face as he enjoyed his granddaughter.
It was really hard not to think about my mom and what she'll miss but my dad is focused on having a positive outlook toward his "new normal", so for his sake we kept things upbeat. She would have wanted us to live life and move forward. She also would have loved seeing Audrey laugh and grab her grandpa's face.
I miss her.

Anderson Pooper Reports
Last week Granna Jan came out for her spring break to hang out with Aud. It was a productive and fun week for both of them. For one, Audrey learned to roll over to her back. Here's a little video where she demonstrates her skills:
For another, Granna Jan made curtains for Audrey's room. I'm particularly happy about this because I had actually planned on doing it myself, but I have absolutely no idea how to sew. Um yea. Kinda one of those things I can't really explain well. So anyway, this was a source of some anxiety for me and I'm very grateful to have it done. (And done well!) Thank you Jan!
Here's a shot of Granna and Audrey. Looking good, ladies!

Strong Finish
She has the homemaking skills of a... well... 30-year old single girl from Hollywood.
But she tried hard. And on her last day staying with us, my sister finally mastered how to make a decent sandwich. She even served it to us in bed. Now that's love.

Better than Vicodin
So I've been sidelined from all work (house projects and actual paid work) by a terrible back problem. Its unbelievably painful and frustrating, and I'm seeing every doctor and/or quack I can find to get myself fixed pronto, but in the meantime videos like this work wonders to distract me from the pain:
Behold my adorable nephew CRAWLING!

HRH Hunter
Met my sweet little nephew, Hunter, for the first time at Thanksgiving.
It appears he has inherited my brother's talent for being able to delight my dad like no one else. On his grandpa's birthday, on the playmat grandpa bought him, and on grandpa's command, he actually rolled over for the first time.
Check out how he sticks the landing:

Rocky Mountain Weekend
It's so nice when my lovely husband comes out to Denver. Not only does it spare me the hassle and fatigue of a couple of flights, but without housework, pets, or any other obligations here in Colorado we get to have pure fun.
This weekend, we got a double dose of Anderson goof off time, because R&M came out to Colorado too. They treated us to a drinks and a Rockies game. We treated them to breakfast, and, well, more drinks. :-) After they headed home, J and I made our way to the Monolith music festival at Red Rocks. Between the gorgeous surroundings, the warm summer breezes and the fantastic music, I couldn't have asked for a better night. Maybe I'm not too old for music festivals after all?

How 'bout that.
My brother is legendary for short no nonsense voice mail messages. They pretty much always go, "It's your brother. Call me back".
You can imagine then, how big the smile was on my face when last week I got this message...
"It's your brother. I'm a dad. How 'bout that!"
My little baby bro -- my little Robby Bobby -- has a beautiful baby boy of his own.
How 'bout that?!

Reunited with old friends
I shouldn't have worried so much about the hubby being lonely. He's now got two dear friends keeping him company at home. First is his favorite cousin, K, who has moved in with us while he's waiting for his apartment to open up later this summer. Second is a brand new Nintendo Wii.
It ends up they all play well together. Maybe too well actually, because its nearly 1 am and look what's going on in front of the Wii in the basement...
Here's my favorite part - their online personas on screen...
That's K on the left and Mr. Anderson on the right. Aren't they cute?

Just sixteen days...
since my last update and yet so so much has happened...
Grandma Anderson passed away on Feb. 7th. Jane was a devoted wife, a loving mother, an indulgant grandma, and a proud great-grandmother. She also had a great gift for crochet, a wicked sense of humor, a love of dancing, and the instincts of a classic and true matriarch -- to feed and worry about the well-being of every member of her clan (especially the boys.)
She'll most certainly be remembered through her recipes, but we will also miss her every time we wrap ourselves in the warmth of her hand-made blankets. Or find one of her "hug coupons" in our scrapbooks.
Before she passed, Grandma told us how happy she was that we were such a "great couple" and she knew she didn't have to worry about us. Just a few days after her service -- on the 15th -- we celebrated our 10th anniversary. As the day passed by, I thought of her and her comment more than a few times. I take a lot of comfort from that approval. After all, she was the Anderson family matriarch, and she knew a thing or two about love - she and grandpa were married 66 years.
So in her spirit -- here it is -- we're shooting for at least 56 more. I think it's the best way to honor her (and Grandpa), and I know she won't mind when we break her record.

Happy 20th Anniversary R&M

BTW - for those of you wondering if that's a real fire - yes, yes it is. My FIL has an obsession with it.

How we're getting rid of the wood
I doubt the people who designed the patio chimenea ever imagined one would ever take on just this much wood.
But those people never met my FIL, R.
Those of you who do know R will immediately recognize this as a classic display of his pyromania God-given fire-building talent.
(Hey guys -- I'm not sure the flames are actually supposed to shoot out the top.)
In any case, in order to speed up progress on cleaning up our yard next weekend we're going to haul the giant heap of un-salvageable barn lumber and leftover trunk and tree bits to Homer G. and light up a proper bonfire in the woods.
My FIL is pledging it will be the biggest of the season. Which means the fine citizens of the HG (and its fire department) should consider themselves warned.

I'm thinking I should get a concert t-shirt - cut off so you can see my belly button.
Had a business trip to Phoenix last week, and we're off on vacation in Mexico tomorrow, so I'm spending the weekend in Scottsdale.
I've been out this way many many times before and never felt particularly connected to the area but this time it's different. The warm weather and western landscape have made me a bit homesick. (Plus Phoenix is beginning to feel like LA in some unpleasant ways too - there's ridiculous traffic, endless mini-malls, and thousands of leased BMWs on the freeways.)
One homesick moment I didn't expect: last night I borrowed my brother-in-law's pick up truck to pick up the man from the airport. It was a clear night with a gorgeous full moon cascading light across the desert. About 10 minutes into the drive I found myself driving with the windows down, warm wind blowing through the cab, with my head bobbing to Led Zeppelin.
That's right. You read it right. Me. In a pick up truck. Listening to Led Zeppelin. And it was, like, totally frickin' awesome.
Tomorrow on to... Puerto Penasco - Mexico!!!
